Description

Purpose:

To prepare attendees for meeting the needs of LGBTQ+ individuals in their chiropractic practices

Description:

This 2-credit hour continuing education course will explore healthcare disparities and inclusive practices for LGBTQ+ patients. Attendees will be presented with base level terminology related to gender identity and sexual orientation with a focus on patient self-identity, sample intake forms reflective of inclusive practices, patient history taking and interviewing strategies, current healthcare pathways and challenges for transgender/nonbinary/gender nonconforming (TG/NB/GNC) people, and clinically applicable recommendations to improve patient outcomes.

Learning Objectives:

Define a common language for treating LGBTQ+ patients

Identify challenges for LGBTQ+ person in seeking healthcare

Promote cultural competence through planning in-office processes and training

Demonstrate culturally competent intake procedures and forms

Describe TG/NB/GNC related history taking and interviewing

Empower learners to better serve the health of LGBTQ+ identified individuals

Dr. William Foshee (he/him/his) currently serves as the American Chiropractic Association Commission on Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Chair and as the chair for the Next Gen ACA Committee, the representative committee for more than 2000 early career chiropractors at ACA. He is a graduate of Northwestern Health Sciences University where he was honored as a Diversity Leadership Scholar for his commitment to underserved population health. He was also named a Philanthropy Fund Foundation Scholar in recognition of his leadership and service to the LGBTQIA community. Dr Foshee endeavors to positively impact culturally competent delivery of chiropractic care and has delivered lectures on health equity to chiropractic stakeholders in national and state organizations, university audiences, and regulatory agencies. He is currently employed by MyoCore, a multi-clinic, hospital-based chiropractic system, at the Medical City Dallas location.
